For Brandy

The animal brave in his pain
has come home
from the veterinary tubes and feeders
and has gone to his old bed
by the kitchen table.
His eyes glaze and he stares
at a place behind and beyond us
where brooks splash
and sweet birds sing
and we are all young
and a frisbee sails across the sky
and he is laughing
and the sun is terribly bright through the trees
and the air so impossibly delicious
we spin and we dance
and our mouths are filled with juice
and sparkles of joy
and there is delirious music
and we know
that the earth is our mother,
mystical and beautiful,
from whose love we come
and to whose arms we return,
and from whom alone
we find our peace.
