Sphinx Moth

hovering like a hummingbird
over blue heal-all flowers that split
a crack in a two hundred foot slab of solid rock
that channels mountain water, rock
smoothed to blue-gray, black underwater
cut by great zebra stripes of quartz
that articulate Paleozoic veins
while in my own soft coral – shaped ears
recent bizarre weather has traveled
due to skylab’s searing incision
through soft
atmosphere, sphinx moth, red
lips along your pulsing abdomen in my dream,
sphinx moth striped
and hovering, on a verge I strive
to embody, hummingbird of wisdom, dust of life
indifferently appearing to me like an omen,
I relish your healing presence
and am ashamed of my petty cynicism, I renew

my dance in your wake, you are real
and all around us delicate things live
