"After ten years as a children's illustrator, it was thrilling to suddenly dive into abstract painting, and surprising even to myself. I've brought with me decades of figure drawing, and long struggles to solve problems of composition, color, value and design. All of this has flowered in these paintings. The abstract works couldn't have come to life without the years of drawing that preceeded them. Discovering texture has been a delight."
