Palmetto Bug

With the livery
you wear:
varnished coffee wings
razor-toothed leggings
bug-eyed beamers
as big as lima beans,
you register as ugly
as vermin
as something that
we must
run after
stamp on
stomp on
mash
squash
squish.

Just now
when the room light glows,
I notice you
and you notice me
and you run
for your poor dear life
as though somewhere
you know what being alive is
and want to keep it going
desperately want to keep it going
for being nothing but what you are
varnished coffee-winged bug-eyed bug,
you with your bug brain
care for can you,
Palmetto?

I who did not make
the Leviathan;
I, Jack, joke,
poor potsherd,
close the light
and let
you
go.
